Craig and Cheryl Cassel

 NTM folks

Updated February 2015

Craig is a Native New Hampshire-ite, born in Manchester and raised in large family setting in Derry.

After graduating high school at Pinkerton Academy in 1980, Craig entered the U.S. Army has a helicopter mechanic. It was here that he first understood the gospel of salvation through faith according to God’s grace found in Christ Jesus. Near the end of February, 1981 at the age of 18 he trusted Christ’s work on the cross as the complete and finished work of salvation on his behalf. Over the next several years as he was being discipled, several of his friends were looking to become full time missionaries, but not Craig. He was willing to pray for them and send them financial support, but no way was he going as a missionary himself! Over a short period of time and through various circumstances orchestrated by the Lord, in February of 1984 Craig surrendered to the Lord’s leading to be involved in full time missionary work with NewTribes Mission. During the summer of 1984 he went on SUMMIT, a short-term missions trip led by NewTribes Mission. The team spent 6 weeks in Paraguay, South America helping missionaries serving in the remote Ache tribe. In January of 1985 he began his missionary training with New Tribes Mission by attending NTM’s Bible Institute in Waukesha, WI. It was here that he met his wonderful bride, Cheryl.

After Bible Institute was finished Craig and Cheryl were engaged and began Mission’s training school in January of 1987, and were married 6 months later, on June 13th, 1987. Cheryl is the 2nd of eight children born to a Southern Baptist pastor in rural, northeast Oklahoma. She counts it a privilege to be born and raised in a Christian home, where she began learning Biblical truths at a young age. She credits her mother for preparing her for the ministry God has her in today. A preacher’s wife has to be ready for anything! Even though Cheryl was raised in a Christian home, it wasn’t until she was 17 years old that she fully understood the gospel message: (1) that she was born a sinner, (2) that God sent His son Jesus Christ to die on the cross so she wouldn’t have to stay a sinner separated from God, and (3) that she needed to make a personal decision to trust what Christ had done for her. She chose the right thing and her daddy baptized her on Easter Sunday 1981. The Cherokee Indians have had missionaries living among them since Cheryl can remember. She appreciated the work done by them and thought it amazing they would come and learn her language. Through their lives God placed the desire to be a missionary in Cheryl’s heart at the tender age of 8. Today, after attending the specialized training with New Tribes Mission, Cheryl is living her dream. After graduation from high school she attended Bacone College in Muskogee OK where she played basketball and softball. Then she found herself back at her home church in OK working with the youth group in her daddy’s church. It was here that she met New Tribes missionaries … again … and got all her questions about missionary life answered. She attended New Tribes Bible Institute in Waukesha, WI January 1985 to December 1986, New Tribes Missions Institute from January 1987 to December 1988 and New Tribes Language Institute from January to June 1989.

For the first several years of their missionary experience, Craig and Cheryl were involved in NTM’s missionary training institutes in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin before following the Lord’s leading to be a part of the training team in Asia Pacific beginning in November of 1993. It was here that Cody, their first child was born in 1996 and then 5 years later the Lord added Cheyenne to their family, who was born in Oklahoma. The Cassel’s count it a privilege to have been able to raise their children on the mission field, as they worked together to bring more and more Asia Pacific tribal groups to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through training national missionaries.

We are looking forward to our next assignment at the NTM Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Camdenton Mo. Starting summer of 2015. Pray as we make the transition to this new assignment. Pray the Lord will give us wisdom as we team up with the other missionary trainers. Pray the Lord will raise our support to 100% of what NTM recommends for us.

Thank you for partnering with us as we expand the reach of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
